ABOUT MAYA BAY

• Maya Bay is located on the west coast of Ko Phi Phi Leh, an island in Krabi province, in the Andaman Sea, about 30 kilometres from the mainland.
• Phi Phi Leh, the island where Maya Bay lies, has a long history of human presence. Archaeological evidence suggests it was inhabited as far back as prehistoric times, with ancient tools and artefacts found in the area. It was traditionally the territory of the sea nomads known as «chao ley» or sea gypsies, indigenous peoples who lived from fishing and from gathering swiftlet nests, in harmony with the natural resources around them.
• Maya Bay sits in a region marked by spectacular limestone karst formations. These cliffs and rock stacks are the result of millions of years of geological processes, including the uplift of ancient coral reefs. It is this unique geology that shapes the bay's unmistakable landscape.
• The waters around Maya Bay are home to a great diversity of marine life. The coral reefs in the area support a very rich ecosystem, with many species of fish, invertebrates and marine plants. Snorkelling or diving here lets you see this biodiversity up close.

Pileh Lagoon is part of the Andamán, known for its rich marine biodiversity. The lagoon is likely home to various species of fish, coral reefs and other marine organisms. Snorkelling or diving in the lagoon offers the chance to observe this marine life. The presence of limestone cliffs and crystal-clear water in Pileh Lagoon suggests that coral reef formations may be present. Coral reefs are vital ecosystems: they support diverse marine life, protect coastal areas and contribute to the overall health of the marine environment.
