Kudu Island (Koh Kudu)

Technically it is located in Phang Nga province, within Phang Nga Bay, and not in Krabi, but it sits right between Phuket and Krabi.

The village of Panyee (Koh Panyee) was founded more than 200 years, at the end of the 18th century, by nomadic Indonesian fishermen from Java. Led by a man named Toh Baboo, three families discovered the protected waters of the bay of Phang Nga while searching for abundant fishing grounds. They built their community entirely on wooden stilts over the shallow sea, as local laws at the time did not allow foreigners to own land.

Growth and community

• Expansion: Over two centuries, that small handful of stilt huts grew into a thriving village of hundreds of families (around 360 households today).

• Infrastructure: The floating community managed to build a school, a health center, a remarkable golden-domed mosque, a cemetery and local shops.

• The floating football pitch: It became world famous thanks to some young people who built a floating pitch from old wood scraps and fishing rafts, which inspired the successful local youth team, Panyee FC.

• Economy: Although traditional fishing, fish farming and cockle harvesting remain fundamental, the village has embraced ecotourism.

• Culture: The descendants of the original Indonesian settlers have maintained their Islamic faith and their unique seafaring lifestyle through more than 300 years of shared family heritage.

The Panak Island (Koh Panak), located in the bay of Phang Nga, was formed millions of years ago from ancient marine sediments and coral reefs, and later served as a hidden refuge for local fishermen and traders. In 1981 it became a protected area within the Ao Phang Nga National Park to preserve its unique tidal sea caves and collapsed lagoon ecosystems.

The Hong Island, also in Phang Nga Bay, gets its name from the Thai word «hong», which means «room», due to its hidden inner lagoons. Shaped by millions of years of geological change and rising sea levels, the island's collapsed caves and secret chambers historically served as shelter for local fishermen and native sea communities before modern ecotourism exploration began in 1989.

Before 1974, the island, known today as Khao Ping Kan, was relatively untouched and inhabited predominantly by indigenous communities. Its international recognition soared after being chosen as a filming location for the movie of James Bond of 1974, The Man with the Golden Gun. The island served as the setting for the lair of the film's antagonist, Francisco Scaramanga. After the film's release, Khao Phing Kan experienced a great tourist boom, becoming a world-renowned destination.

However, the growing popularity of Khao Ping Kan brought serious challenges, including a notable increase in litter and environmental impact. In response to these concerns, and in order to preserve the natural environment, the island was incorporated in 1981 into the Ao Phang Nga Marine National Park. Since 1998, to protect the fragile limestone formations of the neighboring islet, Ko Ta Pu, regulations prohibit tourist boats from getting too close. This measure aims to prevent erosion that could endanger the structural integrity of the rock formations and ultimately cause the island to collapse.
