Wat Pho Reclining Buddha of Bangkok: Much more than a Giant Buddha

If there is one place that defines the spirituality and history of Bangkok, it is Wat Pho. Officially known as Wat Phra Chetuphon, this temple complex is a must stop for any traveler, but there are specific details that make it truly unique.

The Golden Giant: The Reclining Buddha

The centerpiece of the visit is the impressive Wat Pho Reclining Buddha. At 46 meters long and 15 meters high, the statue represents the Buddha's passage to Nirvana.

  • The secret detail: The soles of his feet are decorated with mother-of-pearl, forming 108 sacred symbols representing the features of a real Buddha. It is a work of art of meticulous precision on a grand scale.

The Cradle of Thai Massage

Wat Pho is not just a temple; it was Thailand's first public university and is considered the world center of Traditional Thai Massage.

  • On its walls you will find inscriptions and stone statues in yoga postures, known as the stone contortionists, which served as anatomy manuals for students of ancient medicine centuries ago.

A Labyrinth of Treasures

Walking around Wat Pho allows you to discover an environment full of architectural details:

  • Royal Chedis: Four imposing stupas decorated with colored porcelain in honor of the first kings of the current dynasty.

  • 108 Bronze vessels: During the tour a constant tinkling sound is heard. Visitors are dropping coins into 108 bronze bowls to attract good luck and collaborate with the maintenance of the temple.

Information for your visit

  • Entrance: 300 THB

  • Clothing: Shoulders and knees covered. Barefoot is required to enter the main sanctuary.

  • Tip: It is the perfect temple to visit right after the Grand Palace due to its proximity, offering a more relaxed and shaded atmosphere.
